This little girl's granny is different.  She wears pointy hats and takes her bats and frog to the movies. Instead of chicken fingers for lunch, she makes "gloopy soup from icky slime, sludge sprinkles, and bits of froggy poop!"  She has a tendency to make things disappear.

One day the little girl asks her granny, "How about we try to make you a little more normal-ish?" Granny agrees to try, and she does try. She knits hats (witch hats,) she rides the bus instead of her broom, and even gets new clothes and has her hair styled. She's normal looking now . . . . but something isn't quite right.

The next day when the granddaughter goes to visit Granny, she is still in bed and the little girl is afraid Granny is ill. "What's wrong with you?" she asks, and Granny says she is bored.

The little girl (she is never named in the book) realizes that while her Granny looks normal, she isn't really different inside.  Out of love for her granddaughter she tried to be different but she misses her old ways.  The little girl promptly goes and makes some gloopy soup and lets the bats and frogs back in the house. She apologizes to her granny for making her sad.  Granny jumps up and says, "Not for long!" and has all of her witchy friends over and the little girl has her happy, fun and UNIQUE granny back.

This is a really fun book that delivers a great message:  Love people for what they are. Don't try to change them into something they're not.  Being unique is a good thing - if everyone was the same, life would be so boring!  You could talk to your child about their friends and what is different about each one and what they like best about them. It also gives parents the opportunity to understand what draws their children to certain people an learn more about their friends.

Hubble Bubble, Granny Trouble would be a great addition to your reading list. You might even want it for your permanent collection! :)

Happy Reading!
