SQUIRREL'S FUN DAY by Lisa Moser, illustrated by Valeri Gorbachev

Lexile     250          Pages     44          Ages     5 - 8
AR Quiz No. 159049 EN Fiction
IL: LG - BL: 2.1 - AR Pts: 0.5
AR Quiz Types: RP

Squirrel is very energetic and is determined that he and his friends are going to have a fun day. "Got to go. Got to go. Got to go, go, go!"

He persuades his friends Mouse, Turtle, and Rabbit to come out and play despite the other tasks they have to do. But something always turns out not quite right, although Squirrel doesn't realize it.

At the end of the day, he picks a big bunch of flowers to take to each of his friends to celebrate their fun day, but he can't find any of them!  He starts thinking over the day's activities and sees mistakes he thinks he made.  He is afraid his friends won't want to play with him anymore.  Dejected, he goes home to his nest and hides under the leaves.

Suddenly something plinks against his tail.  He peeks down and sees his friends.  They are throwing seeds up into his nest to get his attention but he thinks it's because they are mad at him. He apologizes, saying he is "sorry, sorry, sorry" that they didn't have fun.  "Oh, no!" they tell him. They explain that they are not mad and tell him how fun the day was for them.  Then they take him and show him the surprise picnic they put together for him complete with starlight and strawberries. "And friends," Squirrel says. "Friends, best of all!"

I love Squirrel's energy. I love Squirrel's exuberance. I love his sense of fun, fun, fun!

Squirrel shows us that it's okay to stop and smell the roses now and then.  He will also appeal to children who are unsure of themselves and maybe help them realize that what they perceive as mistakes they have made actually aren't.

Squirrel and his friends will be a fun, fun, fun addition to your story time!

Happy Reading!
Miss Laurie
